Kelly Shores isn’t done with Vermont just yet.
The HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire customer is returning to the northern state for the 2023 Summer Death Race.
Shores, who resides in Fredericksburg, completed the Winter Death Race in February.
“The 2023 Winter Death Race was completely different from any other Death Race that I’ve experienced in the past. They don’t tell you anything going into the race, so it’s all very unexpected,” Shores said. “We arrived and immediately they put us to work.”
The challenges included building fires, cooking hamburger on a metal bin, and taking nine separate dips into a frigid pond.
Run by Peak Races, this year’s Summer Death Race begins in Pittsfield, VT on June 30.
Shores participated in the 2021 Summer Death Race but pulled herself out of the competition around hour 40.
“I really want to … finish the summer race to prove that I can, and last time it was just because I wasn’t mentally strong enough,” Shores said. “I am now mentally strong enough.”
For those who are thinking about signing up for the Spartan Death Race, Shores has some advice: Train every day and focus on your reason for participating.
“You really have to mentally decide why you want to complete this race,” she explained. “Is it that you’re dealing with a sick family member? Is it that you are wanting to complete because someone said you couldn’t? You have to be in it for you.”
