Volunteer opportunities are available for those who would like to help others in the community.
Action in Community Through Service (ACTS) is seeking volunteers for its thrift store and Hunger Prevention Center.
Located at 3661 Canal Road in Dumfries, the ACTS Thrift Store collects and sells used items, including furniture, decorations, books and toys. All proceeds go to support members of the community.
“With the donations that come in … the thrift store, everything has to be looked over to make sure that it’s good enough for somebody to purchase or us to give to a client,” Liga said.
The Hunger Prevention Center, which opened in 2018, provides food for individuals and families in need.
“When people donate to the Hunger Prevention Center, they donate a bag of mixed groceries,” ACTS CEO Steve Liga explained. “That means everything has to be sorted one can at a time into its proper place, so that we can give it to people the way they need it.”
Liga advised donors of any food pantries to bring a case of one item.
The Hunger Prevention Center and thrift store positions require staff and volunteers. ACTS has a limited number of staff members, and many volunteers aren’t coming in.
“So, if you have some free time we’ve got the place, we’ve got the jobs, and it’s social distanced,” Liga added. “We would love to have you.”
Those interested in becoming a volunteer should go to the volunteer portal, which can be found on the ACTS website.
ACTS, a Dumfries-based non-profit, has been serving the community for more than 50 years.
In addition to its Hunger Prevention Center and thrift store, it offers a variety of services. These include a 24/7 Helpline and housing services, as well as services for those impacted by sexual assault and domestic violence.
