Take a hike!
It’s one activity Virginians can do to kick off the new year.
Virginia State Parks are continuing their annual First Day Hike events, but there will be some changes this year.
Visitors of the state parks will be able to participate in self-guided hikes on January 1, according to an article on the Virginia State Parks website.
Parking is free. This offer does not include entrance to Natural Bridge.
Face masks are required for anyone who goes into the facilities and those unable to practice social distancing.
Groups should be limited to 10 people.
A couple of contests are being offered by Virginia State Parks.
Park visitors have a chance to win a $500 gift certificate by participating in the First Day Hike Photo Contest.
Pictures of the parks that don’t feature rule violations will be considered.
Community members can submit up to three photos as long as they are uploaded at one time.
Gift certificates are also going to be awarded to those who take part in the First Day Hike New Year Challenge.
To get involved, visit a state park and then provide some information, including the number of hikers and the distance of one of them, on the new year challenge web page.
2021 First Day Hike stickers will be mailed to them.
