About 200 community members took to the Occoquan River on Saturday.
But not for recreational activities.
The individuals and groups were removing trash from the river and its banks as part of the ninth annual upper Occoquan River cleanup.
Boy Scout troops 1369 and 295, the Lake Ridge Middle School Green Club, and the Woodbridge High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JRTOC) were among the organizations that participated in the event.
Prince William Trails & Streams Coalition (PWTSC) and the Prince William Soil & Water Conservation District (PWSWCD) assisted, as well.
Volunteers collected about 110 large bags of trash and 60 bags of recyclable items, according to a release from the Friend of the Occoquan (FOTO).
They also removed tires, car bumpers, pipes, PlayStations, trash bins, syringes and plastic chairs.
Park managers from Bull Run Marina and Fountain Head Park, and other county residents provided volunteers with boats and got rid of the trash that was collected.
