Virginia residents are celebrating the beginning of an annual event.
Athletes from across the region kicked off the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games on Thursday.
Law enforcement and Olympians participated in the annual Torch Run. Officials lit the torch, which represents the start of the games, in Arlington and carried it to Richmond.
Local runners started their 8.9 mile journey at Prince William County Fire & Rescue Station 17, which is located at Cardinal Drive and Waterway Drive in Montclair.
They headed down Cardinal Road and Route 1 and finished at the Marine Corps Base Quantico entrance.
Community members cheered them on along the route.
Special Olympics Virginia starts at 7 p.m. on Friday at different sites.
