Christmas trees are a popular source of decoration for the holidays.
They can also cause fires.
Citizens can prevent Christmas tree fires by following tips from the Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue (PWCDFR).
Watering trees and placing them at least three feet from fireplaces, candles, and space heaters are among the suggestions.
Community members, according to a release from PWCDFR, shouldn’t decorate trees with lit candles or burn branches in a fireplace.
Extinguishing candles and turning off decorations when leaving or going to bed can also prevent fires.
PWCDFR also recommends that electrical cords not be positioned under rugs and extension cords not be overloaded.
County residents are also being warned about holiday plants.
Many plants, including mistletoe, holly and poinsettias, are poisonous. They should be placed out of reach of children and pets.
