Individuals across Prince William County are serving those with disabilities. These caregivers, professionals, family members and self-advocates have a chance to be recognized.
The Arc of Greater Prince William is accepting Dorothy Bass-Tolberg Change Agent Award nominations until June 30.
This recognition is named after Dorothy Bass-Tolberg, who put an ad in Potomac News more than 60 years ago. She took this step after realizing that local youth who had developmental disabilities needed educational options.
Bass-Tolberg and the eight families that responded to the advertisement created the Retarded Children’s Training Center as well as an Association for Retarded Children chapter. Today, the chapter is called The Arc of Greater Prince William/INSIGHT, Inc.
The Dorothy Bass-Tolberg Change Agent Award aims to honor community members who are making a difference.
Award nominations may be submitted through Microsoft Forms. A photo of the individual should be emailed to REC@arcgpw.org. The top three nominees will be invited to the 60th Anniversary Gala, where the winner is announced.
Established on February 18, 1964, The Arc serves 2,500 people along with their families.
It runs 17 group homes and 6 supported living sites. The Dale City-based non-profit also has three vocational buildings, two supported employment programs, and two child care centers. Speech therapy, family support and recreation programs are offered, as well.
