Area high school students have a chance to become stronger leaders this school year.
Officials are accepting applications for the upcoming Human Rights Student Leadership Council.
The council teaches Prince William County sophomores, juniors and seniors about government and leadership, according to a release from the county.
It gives participants an opportunity to meet elected officials and Prince William County staff members, as well.
“We also use the Youth at Work program to teach students how to identify discrimination in the workplace,” council Staff Adviser Denise McPhail said in a release. “The students then teach their peers at an annual student leadership conference hosted by Prince William County Public Schools.”
By participating in the council, students learn how they can be good citizens, according to Prince William County Human Rights Commission Chairman Curtis Porter.
“It really helps the community by getting young people, through a positive youth development perspective, to give back and learn about their community and serve in their community,” Porter said in a release.
Student Leadership Council meetings are scheduled for November 1, December 6, January 3, February 26, March 26 and April 18.
They will run from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Edward L. Kelly Leadership Center, 14715 Bristow Road in Manassas.
Applications must be turned in to the Prince William County Human Rights Commission offices by 4:30 p.m. on September 14.
The offices are located at the Ferlazzo Building, 15941 Donald Curtis Drive in Woodbridge.
Online applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on September 14.
