Alyssa Walburger, a senior at Forest Park High School in Woodbridge, has won first place in the George & Stella Knight Essay Contest.
The contest is sponsored by the Colonel William Grayson Chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR), according to a release.
Walburger received a $100 check, a certificate, and a NSSAR Essay bronze medal for her essay “Patriotic Dedication.” It focuses on one of her ancestors, who served as a fifer during the Revolutionary War.
“I cannot imagine the thought of going into battle and being given the important responsibility to relay critical orders to troops,” Walburger said in a release. I can relate to playing an instrument, though. I’m a musician as well; playing the cello for my high school orchestra. I don’t think I could play my instrument with the stress of the battlefield.”
