Did your business lose money because of Winter Storm Jonas? Or do you have to work extra-long hours to make up for the lost time? With more snow expected this weekend, it might be time to call Gemmis Technologies to set up remote access on your computer. If you’d prefer to do it yourself, we’ve compiled some tips so you can choose the way that works best for you.
Remote Desktop
As long as you have working internet, you can easily access your computer and all of its applications using another device, including a tablet or a phone. Your first step will be setting up a remote desktop server on the PC you’re trying to connect to. An easy to use, free way to do this is TeamViewer, which runs on almost everything and avoids a complex setup. Microsoft also offers Remote Desktop apps for Android, iPhone and iPad. If you’re installing TeamViewer, be sure to set up extra security, as any bot scanning your IP address from the Internet will be able to attempt to gain access to your PC.
Remote File Access
If all you need is quick access to certain files, TeamViewer and Microsoft apps offer a file transfer. You can use this to access or upload your files to your remote PC from a different device. An even simpler solution would be to store your files in an online storage service like Dropbox or Google Drive. Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud storage is free and allows you to both view and edit the documents from wherever you are. This means your PC in the office doesn’t even need to be powered on, as opposed to when you’re using remote desktop. You can encrypt these files before storing them online if you’re worried about information sensitivity.
Wake your Computer
Leaving your computer on at all times might not be an option for you. Instead you can enable a feature called Wake-on-LAN which powers on a computer even when it’s off, hibernating, or in sleep mode.
