Wintry weather is finally blowing into town.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), isolated snow showers are expected tonight in the area from 9 p.m. to 1 am.
And on Friday night there is a chance of snow and sleet before 1 a.m. on Friday, and then likely freezing rain and sleet, according to the NWS.
The wintry weather could carry into Saturday, with freezing rain before 1 p.m. forecasted.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is getting ready for the winter weather by treating the roads today and Thursday.
“Throughout Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Arlington* counties (*Arlington maintains own secondary roads) crews treat about 5,200 lane miles with liquid magnesium chloride or brine in advance of winter weather. This includes interstate, primary and high-volume secondary road roads, particularly ramps, bridges, and other critical areas prone to freezing,” stated VDOT in a release.
VDOT is asking residents to keep an eye on the forecast for freezing and precipitation alerts.
“VDOT reminds drivers to fill their gas tanks, slow down, to be aware of potential slick spots such as shaded areas and bridges,” stated a release.
