Make sure that you get home safely from your Valentine’s Day plans tonight, as the National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting snow late tonight, early morning.
According to NWS, a Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 1 a.m. Monday morning through 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
NWS is predicting snow, sleet, and freezing rain with an accumulation of 3 to 5 inches.
The NWS is urging people to stay off of the roads during the storm, as snow and ice will cause slippery roads and impede travel.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has pre-treated the roads, but they warn that the roads will still be slippery and are urging drivers to stay off the road tomorrow.
More from VDOT on icy road conditions:
The use of anti-icing materials does not guarantee that roads won’t be slippery. These materials help to prevent ice bonding to the roads, which assist crews with snow and ice removal operations.
Motorists should be cautious as the weather approaches and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
If travel is absolutely necessary:
watch for black ice and avoid sudden starts and stops,
watch for downed trees and power lines in areas with heavy icing,
slow down and allow slow-moving equipment such as snow plows the right of way.
