The Prince William County Service Authority (PWCSA) will begin preventative maintenance work on the sewer system in the Marusmco Village area in Woodbridge today.
According to a release, PWCSA will be lining sewer mains off of Carter Lane and Hylton Avenue as part of this project. The project is scheduled to be completed within 12 weeks, stated a release.
“The project entails lining sewer mains with Cured-In-Place-Pipe. The lining process is an alternative to replacing the pipe itself, which is a more costly and disruptive measure for both customers and the utility,” stated a release.
More on the project, from a release:
The resin-like substance used in the CIPP process hardens, essentially becoming a new pipe inside the existing sewer main. This protects the main from tree root intrusion and corrosion that can occur over long periods of time. CIPP also prevents groundwater from seeping into the sanitary sewer system during rain events, which helps reduce the amount of flow to the wastewater treatment plant.
The average sewer pipe lasts about 40 years, while CIPP can extend that lifespan to 90 years.
Each year, the Service Authority video inspects more than a hundred miles of sewer line to determine where CIPP would be most effective. This fall, the Service Authority has also lined sewer mains in neighborhoods in Occoquan, Montclair and Dumfries.
