Strategies used by scammers will be uncovered on Saturday.
Scam Jam and Shredfest is occurring at the Ferlazzo Building, 15941 Donald Curtis Drive in Woodbridge, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Information about scams and fraudulent activities will be shared at the free event, which is run by AARP Virginia and the Prince William Area Agency on Aging.
Attendees will be able to shred documents from 8 a.m. to Noon, according to a release from Prince William County.
AARP Associate State Director for Community Outreach Amber Sultane explained that shredding helps protect identities.
“If you just toss a credit card application in the trash, someone can take it, apply for it and steal your identity,” Sultane said in a release. “That’s just one example. Anything that has personal information on it, you want to shred it.”
Members of the Virginia Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Program are also going to return various items, including stocks and bonds, to individuals.
News4 Consumer Reporter Susan Hogan is serving as the keynote speaker and will give a talk at 9:15 a.m.
Free snacks and lunch is provided.
Members of the community who would like to participate must register online or call 877-926-8300.
