Ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, we chatted with firefighter Victor Angry from the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department, to talk safety.
According to Angry, there are three major areas of concern for the holiday weekend – grilling, drinking, and fireworks.
“Over this Fourth of July weekend, we want to really stress the point of you being safe with your fireworks,” said Angry.
Making sure that your grill is a safe distance away from your home, in the event of an emergency, is another important component.
“As you’re grilling, remember two things – keep your grill at least ten feet from your home, and if you live in an apartment and you’re on a balcony, just take that extra step. Take it downstairs,” said Angry.
Angry also recommended calling a sober friend, a cab, or an Uber car if you’ve been drinking and need to get home.
“Uber is a great way for you to travel. If you’re gonna be out and you’re gonna be drinking, please don’t drive,” said Angry.
And with fireworks, make sure children are using fireworks safe for their age group, and that if you’re using fireworks yourself, that you keep the children secure.
“Please ensure that your kids are safe if they use fireworks and that you yourself understand the fireworks that you’ll be using,” said Angry.
