Adults and children have an assortment of plans this Halloween.
Some are trick-or-treating or are acting as chauffeurs, while others celebrate in the comfort of their homes.
Community members can stay safe by following some tips from the Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue (PWCDFR).
Using a flashlight and sidewalks, and looking both ways before crossing the street are a few ways trick-or-treaters can stay safe.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends children wear costumes that fit — to prevent falls — and only enter a home if accompanied by an adult they trust, according to a release from the PWCDFR.
Here are some other safety tips for trick-or-treaters from the Prince William County Police Department (PWCPD).
Motorists are reminded to travel safely and be watchful of children. They should also pull into and leave alleys and driveways slowly and avoid driving distracted.
The PWCPD is also encouraging the public to avoid driving impaired.
Those planning to hand out candy or host a party on Halloween can help protect themselves and others by making sure walkways are clear and have proper lighting.
Items that contain candles should be set up on sturdy tables and away from curtains, doors and landings.
Community members are encouraged to use plastic hooks for hanging lights and avoid overloading extension cords.
