Those driving in Manassas may want to think twice before running red lights in the future.
Manassas City Council approved the addition of red light cameras in a 5 – 1 vote on Monday.
Councilman Ian Lovejoy voted in opposition.
While Lovejoy thinks the Manassas City Police Department would be able to manage the program, he has concerns about the technology.
“The technology is very sophisticated and very powerful and, right now, it can only be used for red light cameras for people who break through the red light,” Lovejoy explained to What’s Up Prince William. “And that’s fine, but the technology is way more powerful than that, and I just worry about where it could go in the future.”
The cameras will be installed at the intersections where the most offenses occur.
A study is going to be conducted to determine where they should be added.
