Recycling may be changing in the county.
The Prince William Public Works Solid Waste Division is looking into other options.
It intends to remove glass from curb collections, and offer bins at the Prince William County Landfill in Manassas and Balls Ford Road compost facility in Bristow, according to a release from the county.
After being brought to and crushed at a local facility, the glass will be used for construction work.
Staff members from the division are also collaborating with recycling processing plants to learn what items county residents should recycle.
The changes are a result of countries revising their recycling rules. This is leading plants to search for those who will purchase processed materials, according to Prince William Public Works Solid Waste Division Director Tom Smith.
Revisions must be made to the County Code before any actions are taken.
“It’s in the code that we require recycling of specific items. So, we’re looking at maybe revising that list, particularly removing glass,” Smith said in a release. “We’re reviewing our options and will present them to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors in March.”
A list of items that can be recycled will be shared to the public after the plans are accepted by officials.
