Virginia residents who are interested in the REAL ID have an opportunity to pick one up.
On December 9, citizens will be able to apply for and purchase a REAL ID at the Dumfries DMV Select.
The DMV Select is located in the John Wilmer Porter Municipal Building, 17755 Main Street.
Though it isn’t required, the identification card offers benefits.
“The biggest difference between your driver’s license and REAL ID is you’ll be able to access federal facilities, you’ll be able to access military bases, and you’ll be able to board planes with this REAL ID without having to go through all of the other background check,” Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood.
Applicants must identify themselves and prove their legal presence by bringing an unexpired passport or birth certificate.
They also need to have two proofs of residency, such as a valid driver’s license, bill or lease agreement.
Additionally, citizens should bring a social security card or a W-2 form that contains it, and proof of changes to their name, which includes marriage certificates.
