Make sure to toss them in the trash when you’re done with them.
The Prince William County Service Authority (PWCSA) is informing customers that wipes are not flushable, even if the package says they are.
Rather than breaking down, they cling to grease in the sewer line, which can lead to blockage, according to a release from the PWCSA.
Previously, two pumps located at the H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility in Woodbridge have been temporarily shut down before while Service Authority staff members removed wipes.
Bar screens and channel grinders that chop up debris can be found on most pump stations.
During high sewage flow or when channel grinders are removed due to maintenance, wipes can build up on the bar screens and staff must remove them manually.
In one month 55-gallon drums of debris were removed, with most of the debris being wipes.
