Prince William County Schools (PWCS) have named their four ‘Teachers of the Year’.
According to a PWCS release, Kathleen Dail, Christy Barcalow, Edward Abram, and Adam Dove are this year’s winners.
Dail also had the additional honor of being named PWCS’ finalist for their submission to the the Washington Post’s teacher recognition program, according to a release.

The PWCS Teacher of the Year is Kathleen “Kate” Dail, ESOL teacher and chair at New Directions Alternative Education Center. She is one of four teachers named Teachers of the Year, and has the distinct honor of also being selected as the School Division’s finalist for The Washington Post’s teacher recognition program. Christina Barcalow, a Gifted Education teacher at Graham Park Middle School, is Middle School Teacher of the Year. Both Edward Abram and Adam Dove, at T. Clay Wood Elementary School, were named by the selection committee as Elementary School Teachers of the Year, and both will get a distinctive plaque.
Dail is a champion for English Learners, taking the time to learn about their lives and using multiple techniques to help students understand concepts, vocabulary, and culture. She is known for doing everything in her power, sometimes working day and night, to ensure that her students are excited about coming to school and to her classroom. She changes the lives of her students by filling them with hope and possibilities few envisioned.

Christy Barcalow is known for challenging students and staff to try new things, and is the driving force behind a grant that is bringing breakfast to every student at Graham Park. The school grew the program from 40 breakfasts to 400. Barcalow gave up her weekends to bring the game of chess to all students, and took them to tournaments. She established a morning announcement television show open to all students to get students involved in school and their community.

Edward Abram, who teaches third grade, is known for his “big heart” and the care he devotes to each student. Parents rave about how he teaches children to have confidence in themselves and to never give up on their goals and dreams. From the chime of the first bell through the echo of the last, he brings his “A” game. His classroom layout, objective-based lessons, and student-centered activities all foster student success.

Adam Dove is an energetic teacher who uses the creative arts to get students excited about learning. His goal is for all students to become fluent, confident speakers who call upon their creativity to express their knowledge of the world. He has integrated his love for drama into the curriculum so that every class is a continuous learning experience for his students.
