The Prince William Humane Society has opened an “Adopt Shop” in Dumfries, to help get rescued animals adopted.
Located at 17983 Dumfries Shopping Plaza, the facility just opened after years of planning.
“The Adopt Shop’s actually been a program that we’ve been dreaming of for about four years now, but we finally go to open it two months ago,” said Adopt Shop Center Manager Jill Gregory.
According to Gregory, the organization is a community partner with the Prince William County Animal Shelter, and bring in animals to be adopted from the Prince William shelter.
“We transfer our pets over from [their shelter] hoping to give them a little bit of specialized attention, and really be able to matchmake new adoptees with our adopters,” said Gregory.
The design of the Adopt Shop is meant to be fun and inviting, and features a cat room and a dog room with collapsible cages, to convert the dog room into a socialization space.
“Our Adopt Shop is supposed to be a take on ‘who’s that puppy in the window’ – we want to be able to bring our community adoptable pets, instead of going to a pet store,” said Gregory.
As part of the work the Prince William Humane Society does, they have a Poor Animals Welfare and Surgical (PAWS) fund, which helps pay for emergency surgery for animals that come in to the shelter.
Gregory said one dog in particular that the Adopt Shop is trying to find a home for is Daisy.
“She’s seven to nine years old, she’s actually been with us for the longest – she’s been here for about two months, so we’re really looking for her forever home…she’s super sweet, she’s going to be perfect for a family who wants to go around town, do a little bit of hiking, doing activity but then just coming home and hanging out,” said Gregory.
Currently, the Adopt Shop needs donations for their PAWS fund, as well as volunteers to work with the animals, provide office assistance, and serve as foster homes for animals.
