The Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue needs you to ‘adopt’ a fire hydrant near your home this winter and spring.
According to a release, the fire and rescue department is working with Prince William Home Depot locations this winter, asking community members to take part in the Adopt-A-Hydrant program – from now through March.
“This program will enable residents and/or businesses to adopt a fire hydrant close to their home or business and maintain the area around the hydrant keeping it free of snow during the winter and free of weeds and shrubbery in the summer,” stated a release.
Keeping a hydrant clear and accessible helps firefighters to access the hydrants in the case of an emergency, which can save property and prevent deaths.
During the winter, individuals are asked to shovel an area around their adopted fire hydrant after any snow accumulation and clear a three-foot path around the hydrant, with a path up to the roadway, so first responders can see and access it, according to a release.
Residents that register to adopt a hydrant will receive an “Adoption Certificate” which can be used at any Prince William Home Depot location to get a free hydrant snow stick.
More on the adoption program, from a release:
Once they have received the snow stick, they place it near the adopted hydrant and wait for the snow to fall. Photo Contest Pictures will be solicited of the adopted hydrants and families to post them on our Fire & Rescue Facebook page (www.facebook.com/PWCDFR). In the spring, after the last snow has fallen, participants will be eligible to enter a free drawing for a gift certificate from your local Home Depot Stores: Dale City #4604 14025 Foulger Square Woodbridge, VA 22192 (703) 670-3699 East Manassas #4648 8805 Liberia Avenue Manassas, VA 20110 (703) 393-1954 Manassas #4607 7486 Stream Walk Ln Manassas, VA 20109 (703) 368-4900 All questions should be directed to Bob Wall @ 703.304.9771 or rwall@pwcgov.org
