Can you adopt a fire hydrant in your neighborhood?
The Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue (PWC DFR) is working with Prince William Home Depot stores to get residents to participate in the Adopt-A-Hydrant program.
The program, which runs December through March, “will enable residents and/or businesses to adopt a fire hydrant close to their home or business and maintain the area around the hydrant keeping it free of snow during the winter and free of weeds and shrubbery in the summer,” stated a release.
In the event that fire and rescue is called out for an incident, the program ensures that firefighters will be able to access the water to extinguish any fires quickly.
“We ask that Prince William County citizens shovel the area around their adopted fire hydrant after each snowfall by clearing a three-foot path around the hydrant as well as clearing a path from the street/roadway up to the hydrant so it is visible and accessible to fire and rescue crews,” stated a release.
Residents that register to adopt a hydrant will receive an adoption certificate which can be used at any Prince William Hope Depot to get a free hydrant snow stick to make the hydrant.
