Students attending Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) have accumulated more than $382,000 in school lunch debt.
Settle the Debt hopes to pay it off.
The Gainesville-based non-profit is raising funds to get rid of debt from the 2019-20 year, according to a release from Settle the Debt.
So far, it has collected $34,000, which is being used to pay off at school lunch debt at nine institutions — Alvey Elementary School in Haymarket, Bel Air Elementary School in Dale City, Buckland Mills Elementary School in Gainesville, Old Bridge Elementary School in Lake Ridge, Fred Lynn Middle School in Woodbridge, Lake Ridge Middle School, Woodbridge Middle School, PACE West School in Gainesville, and Woodbridge Senior High School.
Settle the Debt raised funds during this past holiday season.
By the end of the fundraising effort, it had collected more than $50,000 that eliminated school lunch debt at over 30 schools.
Community members can make a donation on the Settle the Debt website or Facebook page. They may also support the organization by creating fundraisers on Facebook.
