Three decades ago, the Prince William County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (PWCAC-DST) started the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest and Program.
Since its foundation, the event has received various recognitions.
Among them is the Health Kids, Healthy Communities Local Hero Award, which it received in 2019, according to Deborah Campbell from PWCAC-DST.
The oratorical contest is returning to Dale City on January 20.
Beginning at 11 a.m., it will be held at the Hylton Memorial Chapel, 14640 Potomac Mills Road.
Six students — three middle school students and three high school students — are presenting speeches. Members of the MLK Community Choir will be performing, as well.
PWCAC-DST is also hosting the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
Through the day of service, non-perishables as well as new and gently used coats are being collected.
They will be donated to families in Prince William County, and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park.
