The Mamie Davis Park in Occoquan looks a little worse for wear, following a truck accident.
According to Occoquan Town Manager Kirstyn Jovanovich, mid-January a dump truck lost its brakes on Route 123 and turned on to Commerce Street in Occoquan, to attempt to slow down and avoid damage to other vehicles.
“After turning left onto Washington Street, the truck ended up rolling backwards on Washington Street and landing inside Mamie Davis Park,” stated Jovanovich.
During the accident, the truck caused damage to the iron work, landscaping, and brick sidewalks, as well as destroying one of the brick pillars. Fuel also needed to be removed from the site, stated Jovanovich.
No cars or pedestrians were injured during the incident. The gazebo in the park was also spared.
The town is working with the trucking company to make repairs to the park “which we anticipate will take several weeks to complete due to the amount of damage caused by the accident,” stated Jovanovich.
Jovanovich stated that she was unsure where the truck was headed, what it was hauling, or if any charges were filed as a result of the incident.
