Pole-mounted speed displays aim to get people to slow down if they’re driving too fast. The display poles, with flashing digital numbers, show people how fast they’re going and might encourage drivers to slow down to the speed limit, which is posted on the pole above the digital display.
The Prince William County Department of Transportation has installed a couple of the displays as part of a pilot program, said Steve Stevens, a transportation planning engineer for the department. Hillendale Drive in Dale City and Vint Hill Road in the Greenwich area are the first two sites to get the displays. “We have … the opportunity to install these devices throughout the county. However, before going in feet first, we want to do an analysis to make sure this is what we want.”
