Wondering when your local bus is going to arrive? There’s now an app for that.
According to a release, Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC) bus information is now available on Moovit, a free transit app that can be used on iOS and Android phones.
The app currently has 55 million users, and pulls information directly from organizations like PRTC, as well as real-time information and information from users to provide transit updates.
“Some people hesitate to use transit because of the uncertainty about when their bus will arrive. By providing real-time information, we’ll make our transit services more attractive and help to put riders’ minds at ease,” stated PRTC Chairman Frank Principi.
PRTC is making the data available for free to Moovit and all interested transit apps, and the data is currently already available on Google Transit, stated a release.

In addition to providing real-time data, the Moovit app offers “Get Off Alerts”– a great feature for those unfamiliar with their route and for those who like to nap, read, or catch up on social media during their commute. It also features step-by-step itineraries, listings of other departure times for routes, and listings of nearby transit options.

Moovit was named Top Local App of 2016 by Google. It is available for iOS and Android systems and provides local transit information in more than 1200 cities in 75 countries and can be used in 43 languages. Moovit users also may send reports about their travel experience, such as bus congestion levels and cleanliness, to help others have a better travel experience. PRTC operates commuter and local bus services in Prince William County, the City of Manassas and the City of Manassas Park. It is able to provide real-time data to app developers through its Computer-Aided Dispatch/Automated Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) system, which took several years to develop and was funded through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation. PRTC provides the raw data to app developers but has no input into app design or responsibility for the accuracy of the information.
