What would you do if you were a mayor?
Local students can share their plans by participating in the “If I Was Mayor For A Day” essay contest.
Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood is encouraging 5th- through 12th-graders who live in the town to take part.
Due December 31, essays can be submitted on Wood’s website.
The entries should contain between 200 and 500 words and offer insight about the mayor’s role.
“What things would be better? What things would they change?” Wood said. “What ideas do they have that — it’s coming from them — to make this community a better place?”
Composition, persuasiveness and originality are a few factors that judges will consider.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the selected individuals, who also have a chance to act as mayors.
“I want to give them the opportunity to come in [the council chambers], to hit the gavel, and to experience the opportunity of a lifetime and be mayor for the day,” Wood explained.
Officials are going to reach out to the winners in March 2020 and recognize them at a council meeting next year.
