Dumfries residents received a special gift this Mother’s Day.
Fifty masks and corsages were given out at the Action in Community Through Service (ACTS) Hunger Prevention Center on Sunday afternoon.
Monique Wood, Mayor Derrick Wood’s wife, made the masks.
“It was a labor of love, something out of my heart that I just wanted to give back to the senior citizens and the mothers in the Dumfries community,” Monique Wood said.
She had planned to host an event, but it was expected to fall through.
“So I said, ‘What can I do this year to still help out … or just do something for the mothers in the Dumfries community?’ And I said, ‘Oh, well I know how to make these masks. I should make some masks and see if I can hand them out,’” Monique Wood explained.
She teamed up with her friend, Sandra Matt, who created the corsages.
“We coordinated together and decided that we should do something for the community, and that’s what we came up with — just little gifts that we do on the side — and decided to just bless the community with it,” Monique Wood said.
