A Manassas student could win big this year for her academic excellence.
Sophia Xiao, a senior at Osbourn High School in Manassas, has been named as a finalist for the annual National Merit Scholarship Program, according to a release.
The program has more than 15,000 students competing for 7,400 scholarships totaling more than $32 million, according to a release.
More about Xiao, from a release:
Xiao was named a semifinalists based on PSAT scores taken in the fall of 2014. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of high school seniors, included the highest scoring entrants in each state. To become finalists, students must demonstrate a high record of academic performance in college preparatory course work and earn a recommendation from a high school official, according to a press release issued by NMSC.
Half of the 15,000 students will win a scholarship, along with the title of ‘Merit Scholar’, stated a release.
Xiao will be notified in April if she is one of the winning students, according to a release.
