“Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.” While this quote comes from Margaret Mead, it also explains the kindness of a small group of individuals and businesses helping the homeless in Woodbridge.
According to Stefan Walter, a friend reached out to him a few weeks ago, stating that he wanted to do something to help the community over the holidays. After brainstorming, the two decided that helping homeless was the best idea.
“Sean wanted to donate socks because a lot of people give the homeless a lot of things, but what they don’t receive a lot of is socks,” stated Walter.
Walter and his friend enlisted the help of six other businesses – Goodluckstef Productions, Wireless Zone, Jerry’s Subs & Pizza, Jetwave Wireless, Devious Kustomz and SpecDive Tactical – to make their idea a reality.
Walter stated that Jerry’s Subs & Pizza put collection boxes in all of their Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. locations to collect socks and other items.
“We collected over 400 [pairs of] socks, 15 giant Jerry’s large turkey subs – that feed 40 people- plus $5 Jerry gift cards, bottles of water, hats and clothing,” stated Walter.
The group brought the donated items to the homeless ‘tent city’ that is located behind the Bungalow Alehouse in Woodbridge. This tent city is just one of many in Prince William County.
According to Walter, the homeless individuals were excited about the donations, and the group intends to do more community outreach like this next year.
“We realize that homelessness can happen to anybody…the best thing to do when you receive great things in life and in business is to give back to the community. The better you can make your community, the better you make the people around your community. It’s all about giving back and doing what’s right,” stated Walter.
