Literacy Volunteers of America — Prince William (LVA-PW) is thanking its volunteers and supporters.
An Awards and Recognition Night was held by the non-profit on Tuesday evening.
The program took place at Hillendale Fire Hall, 13511 Hillendale Drive in Dale City.
Based out of Dale City, LVA-PW seeks to teach area adults life changing skills that help them prosper.
“Each of you in this room has a part in helping us fulfill our mission and you are the heroes that make a difference,” Executive Director Debbie Abbott told the event’s attendees.
Mashood Ahmed was recognized as the 2019 Student of the Year.
Ahmed hopes to earn his General Education Development (GED) and attend Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA).
LVA-PW named Richard “Rick” Cantu the Tutor of the Year.
Since he joined LVA-PW five years ago, Cantu has volunteered more than 550 hours and has spent more than 220 hours planning classes and activities.
The Waite family received the Patti J. Beattie Volunteer of the Year Award.
Joe, Tiffany, Dora and Maggie Waite have supported LVA-PW fundraisers and events for more than 10 years.
