Having a positive impact on others can start through leadership roles.
The Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) former Deputy Executive Director Carmen Landa Middleton spoke at a recent Hispanic Council meeting.
It took place at the Prince William Chamber of Commerce’s headquarters in Manassas on November 6.
During her presentation, Middleton explained how members of the Hispanic community can serve as influential role models.
She suggested individuals join non-profit boards and participate in the education system.
“Education is the genesis of almost all Hispanic success in this nation,” MIddleton said. “And whether it’s speaking at a Career Day, running for School Board, or being an advocate for underrepresented students in your local school district, your voice and experience really matter.”
Middleton also recommended her listeners “diversify” their networks.
They should make “valuable connections” for others, as well.
“Ask yourself, ‘How can I help this one person?’” Middleton said. “It might be through an introduction. It might be through a recommendation. It might be you asking your network, ‘Hey, can you help this person find a job or get a much-needed experience as they’re trying to acquire a new skill?’”
