Freshman students from Osbourn High School in Manassas are having a ton of fun at the Fire and Rescue Camp this year.
Run by the Manassas Department of Fire and Rescue for two weeks at the high school, the camp gives students an opportunity to learn about fire and rescue work, and acquire new skills.
“It’s all about teamwork, and all about communication,” said Master Fire Technician Kevin Shafer.
The students are all given uniforms for the camp that Manassas firefighters actually wear, according to Shafer.
Throughout the two weeks the students take part in different obstacle course activities like the ‘Barrel Battle’ and ‘Bucket Brigade’, which mirror activities that firefighters do. The students will also be learning CPR and First Aid, according to Shafer.
“We did responses this morning. So they had to find their house on a street map book, and then respond in the firetruck. So that was probably one of the coolest things that we do,” said Shafer.
One other interesting component to the camp is the career preparation element that all of the students take part in.
“Probably the most important thing we do is that we make every kid fill out an application, and do an interview to get a job,” Shafer said.
