A new school year has begun.
Huntington Learning Center has a few tips for parents and guardians as children transition from one grade to the next.
Promoting organizational skills and encouraging children to stay with a routine are a couple of recommendations.
Parents and guardians are also advised to establish study habits, address gaps in skills early on, and emphasize learning.
The amount of homework help adults provide students depends on the grade.
More assistance will be needed for those in Kindergarten than 5th-graders. Here are suggestions for each year:
- Kindergarten – Children may need help with homework and learning how to be neat and follow directions. Parents and guardians are encouraged to read to them each night.
- First grade – Students working on homework by themself should be encouraged. Adults and children should read to one another as the teacher directs.
- Second grade – It’s suggested that kids work on homework independently and continue reading to parents and guardians.
- Third grade – Keeping an eye on homework and reading on their own is recommended for third graders.
- Fourth grade – Students should learn more about time management and organizational skills and read each night.
- Fifth grade – Parents and guardians are advised to make sure that children have a good homework routine and strong organizational and study skills.
