Stories of history will be shared in Manassas.
The fifth annual Prince William/Manassas History Symposium is occurring from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on March 30 at the Old Manassas Courthouse.
It will offer information on various time periods, according to a release from Prince William County.
“We try to pick a diverse range of topics. It’s not all Civil War. It’s not all Colonial,” Historic Site Operations Supervisor Rob Orrison said in a release. “We try to pick topics that cover the very diverse history of the county.”
The City of Manassas, the City of Manassas Parks, Culture & Recreation, and the Prince William County Historic Preservation Division are hosting the event.
Here is more information about the sessions, according to the release:
- Prince William County’s Own: The 3rd Virginia Regiment in the American Revolution — It will focus on a local military unit that served in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
- The Town’s full of Bluecoats – Prince William County During the Spanish American War — Participants will hear stories about Army troops that visited the county in 1898.
- Jennie Dean and the Manassas Industrial School — This discussion will be centered around Jennie Dean, who established the Manassas Industrial School for Colored Youth (MIS).
- Prince William County at the Battle of Gettysburg — Attendees are going to learn about Prince William County Civil War fighters who were a part of Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg.
- Virginia vs. Lorena Bobbitt: Looking Back 25 Years Later — The session will be about Lorena Bobbitt, who is now Lorena Gallo.
In addition to participating in discussions, community members will have an opportunity to view and touch artifacts at the Manassas Museum.
