Historical documents dating back to the 1700’s have returned home to Prince William County.
In the midst of the Civil War, two courthouse items – Liber A 1731-1732, first deed book of the county, and court order book Dumfries District Court – 1798-1799 – were removed.
A Rhode Island collector was willing to give them back in 1936, according to Circuit Court Historical Research Volunteer Ron Turner. However, payment was required, which sparked a disagreement.
Tracy Harter and Greg Crawford from the Library of Virginia (LVA) saw that the records were missing when performing an inventory of the court, a release from the Circuit Court Clerk explained.
The historical documents were found at LVA, preserved, and brought to Prince William County. Copies and digital versions have been provided, as well.
Community members can soon see the records at the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s Office, which is located on the third floor at 9311 Lee Avenue in Manassas.
