Federal grant money amounting to $1.5 billion could mean relief for Prince William drivers that use Interstate 95, and Virginia Railway Express (VRE) passengers.
According to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Department of Rail and Public Transit have recently applied for two federal grants.
If awarded the grants, the agencies could bring in $1.5 billion to pay for road and rail improvements in the area.
On the road side, the additional funding could be used to extend the I-95 Express Lanes from their current stopping point in Garrisonville down to U.S. 17, according to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star.
And for the rail side of things, the grant funding would add a third track in Fairfax County and help to make improvements to the Long Bridge, which could help reduce congestion crossing the Potomac River, improving the trip for VRE riders, according to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star.
The project would be named the “Atlantic Gateway”.
