Educators, electeds, former students, and community members gathered to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the George Mason University Science and Technology Campus in Manassas.
The campus, built in 1997, is now considered one of the top research universities in the United States. The county first approached George Mason University in 1987 to build a university site in Prince William, and over the years, the campus has grown and developed.
Throughout the history of the campus there have been many changes, including the opening of the Hylton Performing Arts Center in 2010, the opening of the Serious Games Institute in 2014, and the renaming of the campus in 2015.
According to a release, there are plans to continue to grow the campus, with a projection of 2,500 more students and 100 new faculty joining the university within the next decade.
Additionally, there will be an additional research center, a brewery, and 350-unit apartment complex for students and faculty, which are all slated for the area, according to a release.
