In Leatherneck Gallery, our curators will have a special display of Tarawa related artifacts, and the Archives Branch of the USMC History Division will be displaying rare archival material (personal journals of Marines, maps, photographs, etc.) from the battle. Also, in Leatherneck Gallery, our Community Outreach team will be displaying WWII uniforms and gear. At 11:00 am in Scuttlebutt Theater, the Museum will be showing “With the Marines at Tarawa,” the documentary short film depicting the harrowing battle between the U.S. Marines and the Japanese for control of Tarawa. Museum curator, Ben Kristy will be sharing information about the award winning film, and as a special treat for visitors, Kristy will be showcasing the movie’s rare WWII-era gold painted plaster Oscar that was presented to the Marine Corps in 1945. The Marine Corps’ Oscar is one of just a few plaster Oscars still in existence from the era. (Kristy will also be presenting the movie and the Oscar on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 11:00 am.)
