High school students have received scholarships from electric cooperatives.
Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) awarded $1,500 scholarships to 10 applicants.
Applicants were based off academic records, essays, leadership, community service and recommendations, according to a release from NOVEC.
Out of those selected, one received an additional $1,500. Lydia Kang was announced as the Manley Garber Scholar, and won $3,000 from NOVEC in Manassas.
NOVEC Public Relations Vice President Lisa Hooker commented, “We congratulate all scholarship winners and wish them the best as they prepare for higher education.”
The NOVEC Scholarship recipients are:
- Lydia Kang — Battlefield High School in Haymarket
- Sahil Dharamsi — Osbourn Park High School in Manassas
- Tate McLean — St. John Paul the Great Catholic High School in Dumfries
- Olivia Brooks — Mountain View High School, Stafford County
- Krista Brzezynski — Fairfax High School, Fairfax County
- Diane Jung — Centreville High School, Fairfax County
- Cosette Cusson — Kettle Run High School, Fauquier County
- Gina Nored — Freedom High School, Loudoun County
- Natalie Shand — Freedom High School, Loudoun County
- Benjamin Kelly — Manassas Park High School in the City of Manassas Park
Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) Educational Scholarship Foundation awarded $1,000 scholarships to 58 students. Recipients were based on financial need, academic achievement, and personal statement. Out of the 58, three were from the Northern Virginia area.
The VMDAEC scholarship recipients from Northern Virginia are:
- Connor Martin — John Champe High School, Loudoun County
- Calle Junker — Woodgrove High School, Loudoun County
- Bridget Atkinson — Seton High School in Manassas
