The Prince William County Service Authority (PWCSA) wants to make sure you don’t let “FOG” ruin your holidays.
According to a release, “FOG” – fats, oils, and grease – have the ability to damage your plumbing and the sewer system when you pour it down the drain.
“After dining on your holiday dinner this year, please be sure to properly dispose of the leftover FOG by canning it and tossing it in the trash. More than 80 percent of clogs in the Service Authority sewer system can be attributed to grease being poured down the sink,” stated a release.
Sewer mains can often be home to “fatbergs”, which are globs of grease that are congealed on the interior of the sewer pipes, which can cause obstructions, according to a release.
“FOG is the most common cause of blockages in sewer mains. This translates into more maintenance on our part, which can lead to increased costs to customers,” stated PWCSA Operations & Maintenance Director Don Pannell in a release.
