There is help for those who have been impacted by domestic violence.
An array of services are offered by Action in Community Through Service (ACTS).
They include a shelter, court advocacy, adult groups and a children’s program.
The Dumfries-based non-profit also has a Domestic Violence Hotline, which can be reached at 703-221-4460.
According to Director of ACTS Domestic Violence Mayra Martinez, domestic violence has increased since the Coronavirus outbreak began.
Martinez suggests that individuals consider the degree of escalation of a situation. They should also separate themselves in the home, which allows each person to cool off. If it’s still escalating, those who feel at risk are advised to plan a safety route.
Leaving a bag of essentials in your car’s trunk, keeping a communication device — such as a phone or tablet — on hand, and hiding an extra set of car keys within reach are some safety planning recommendations Martinez mentioned.
Those who have children should sleep in their rooms, which enables them and the kids to escape together, if need be.
Many resources are available for community members.
“COVID-19 has increased a level of fear more than normal — right? — because of the social distancing and not being able to connect with people to that same level,” Martinez said. “However, I want our clients and victims to know that there’s lots of help and resources.”
In addition to the ACTS Domestic Violence Hotline, community members can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline, which is 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or chat with someone at thehotline.org.
They may also text LOVEIS to 22522.
