It all started with Sandy Austin’s desire to give the neighborhood kids something to do.
Austin, a former police officer and Dale City resident, recently started the Dale City Drum Line – a group of middle schoolers that are learning to play the drums.
“It’s just a bunch of kids who like to play drums and who are interested in the drums, so I decided to do something like that for the kids,” said Austin.
According to Austin, six children are currently participating in the drum line, but she is hoping that more will join in the coming months.
“We get together on Saturdays and practice for about an hour, then I feed the kids, and then they go swimming. It’s something to keep them from being on the computer all day,” said Austin.
Right now, she’s attempting to raise $5,000 to purchase more drums and related equipment.
“I don’t believe there’s enough activities for the kids to do in Dale City, so I wanted to encourage them to do something different,” said Austin.
The group has yet to do any public performances, as they’re still learning, but she’s hoping they will perform out in the community in the near future.
“Right now we’re probably just trying to play at some of the local football games and athletic events, and then go from there,” said Austin.
