To keep your computer running as smoothly as possible, it’s vital to do regular maintenance on it. Follow these simple steps to not only improve your computer’s everyday use but to extend it’s overall lifetime.
Remove unwanted files
A disk cleanup removes temporary files, items in the recycle bin, and downloaded program files. Windows makes the process pretty simple. Go to my computer, right click on the drive you want to clean. Choose properties and then click disk cleanup.
Delete Browsing history
Temporary files, history, cookies, and data all unknowingly build up while browsing the internet. If you keep your passwords saved, then refrain from deleting them or cookies. Otherwise, deleting this stuff helps clears up data space. To do it, open your browser and click on the main menu at the top. Find the browsing history and click clear browsing data.
Remove unused programs
If there are any programs with expired trials on your computer, delete them. These are just taking up space. Your computer will run better, the less it has on it. More than one photo editing program for example, is just taking up valuable space and slowing the computers speed. In contrast, always let windows perform updates. This will help you effortlessly keep security and bug fixes up to date.
Never leave your computer unprotected
Even free anti-virus software is better than nothing. It’s extremely important to keep your computer secured. This includes checking sources before downloading files or programs, avoiding bad websites, and refraining from clicking suspicious looking emails. It’s also a good idea to clean out your email by deleting as many as you can, clearing your delete folder, and even emptying your computers recycle bin.
Use external drives to backup files
Not only will external hard drives help keep your files secure in case of a computer crash, it can also free up space on your computer.
Defrag your computer
You should be defragmenting your computer once a month. The windows disk defragmenter is responsible for moving the most used files into easily accessible areas and the least used files to less accessible areas. This helps your computer run at optimal speed by organizing files and data. Your computer may already be set up to run defragmantation.
Clean the dust
Use a compressed air can to get the dust and dirt out from under your keys. Use a cotton swab to clean the fans blades. Too much dust can overheat your computer or cause hardware failure.
Ask the experts
If you don’t have time to complete this checklist, call in the experts. At Gemmis Technologies we know how valuable your time is, so we have maintenance contracts with businesses to take care of the checkups for you.
Follow these guidelines and your computer will run fast and efficiently for longer than it’s average life expectancy.
