Lutheran Church of the Covenant (LCOC) in Dale City has a lofty goal: packing enough meals for non-profit Rise Against Hunger to feed 30,000 people.
According to LCOC Pastor Darcy Tillman, the church and volunteers will be packing the 30,000 meals on March 10 at 15008 Cloverdale Road.
“We’re really excited about this event, and also being able to partner with Woodbridge Rotary to do this. This will be our fourth year doing it. We’ve done it twice for 10,000 meals, and last year 20,000 meals, and this year we’re expanding it,” said Tillman.
Tillman said that in 2016, Rise Against Hunger helped feed one million people.
“It’s a pretty exciting opportunity – to feed those who are hungry, especially young children who need that nourishment, to be able to go to school, and to learn,” said Tillman.
The group needs volunteers to assist with packing the meals, and they also need to raise $8,700 to meet their goal to pay for supplies. They’ve raised $3,000 thus far.
To help raise the funds, LCOC and the Woodbridge Rotary will be hosting a Chili Cook Off on January 20 at the church at 6 p.m.
There will be chili, games, and music. The event is no charge, but all donations will be put toward raising the $8,700.
