A cat that has rabies has been found in the City of Manassas Park.
The Prince William Health District (PWHD) is seeking additional information.
According to a release from the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), the feline was discovered around Martin Drive on October 17.
It’s reported that a local resident was scratched and/or bit the cat. It had long, white fur as well as dark brown and black markings, and its hind leg was injured.
Individuals who came across a cat in that location from October 7 to October 17 are encouraged to call PWHD at 703-792-6300.
In July, a rabid bat was found in the City of Manassas.
Rabies can be passed on through bites, or when saliva or brain tissue enters mouths, eyes and wounds.
Community members can protect themselves and their pets from the deadly disease, which impacts the nervous system, by making sure that rabies vaccinations are up-to-date.
They should also avoid feeding stray animals and touching those that are injured, sick or dead.
Those who see a stray animal may reach out to the Manassas Park Animal Control Division by calling 703-361-1136.
More information about rabies can be found by visiting the VDH website or calling PWHD.
