Local bus shelters have become more pleasing to the eye.
A bus shelter beautification project was started by several organizations – Keep Prince William Beautiful (KPWB), OmniRide, Prince William County Neighborhood Services Division, Amazon Web Services In Communities (AWS), Apple Federal Credit Union, and Prince William County Parks, Recreation & Tourism.
Artists made environmental stewardship-themed designs at four shelters, according to a release from KPWB. Chosen from KPWB’s request for proposals, the artists were each equipped with a $500 grant.
The shelters feature a name card of the creator and a QR code that can connect viewers with their website. When the pieces are sold a year later, artists will also receive half of the proceeds.
Volunteers will ensure that the sites are taken care of and clear of litter.
The effort has multiple goals. It seeks to increase the beauty of communities, make rides more enjoyable, and raise awareness about why protecting the environment is important.
“Similar projects across the country have had the added benefit of deterring litter and vandalism and have been instrumental in connecting the local communities to public art. KPWB and our partners in this project are excited and proud to bring such a worthwhile program to Prince William County,” KPWB Executive Director Rico Fleshman said in a release.
Here are the shelters that are a part of the initial bus shelter beautification project, and the artists:
